Our mission
AVAG aims to be an innovative, effective organization with two firmly based lines of activity, teaching and research. Our teaching arm trains students to be independent healthcare professionals who put the interests of the pregnant woman, her partner and child first. They are given the academic knowledge they need to improve their healthcare performance on a continual basis. Our research makes a real contribution to knowledge about and innovation in midwifery and perinatal care in general.
AVAG aims to be an organization that encourages its teaching and research staff to make full use of their talents and ambition. It also challenges students to be ambitious and to get the most out of their training.
AVAG aims to be an open, transparent organization with wide-ranging contacts in society. It listens to the wishes and needs of its students and translates these into continual improvement of its teaching. It is responsive to social changes and modifies its teaching and research to take them into account.
Our vision
AVAG trains midwives who can provide client-centred care and help women to make informed choices on pregnancy and childbirth. Our basic premise is that pregnancy and childbirth are natural physiological processes and that too much or too little treatment should be avoided.
We believe in freedom of choice for women.
Academic research improves our basic understanding of pregnancy and childbirth, shows which form of treatment is effective and provides a solid basis for innovation. Midwifery science focuses on the pregnant woman, her partner and child and provides the clinical, epidemiological, psychological and sociological insights needed to ensure optimum care for them.
The norm for our educational programme is the good student who wants challenging teaching and is prepared to make the effort needed to get the most out of it. Our aim is to help students to learn as much as possible during their studies and graduate with a high level of knowledge and skills, so that they can function as excellent midwives in professional practice.
We aim to be a community of teachers, researchers, students and professionals in the field. Within this community, we share knowledge and experience and encourage one another to acquire habits of critical, innovative thinking.
